Why Believe? 03:28
Why do people believe in rock and roll? (x2) I don’t know, I don’t know, But I feel it in my soul, Is that why people believe in rock and roll? Are they scared? Are they terrified? Are they only getting older every day of their lives? Have they given their hearts to dark conceits? Are they making something happen? Or just saving their receipts? Why do people believe the government? (x2) Promise made, money spent, And we know they’re full of shit, So why do people believe the government? Whatcha gonna do without life insurance? What are we gonna do without life insurance? (x2) Why do people believe in space and time? (x2) I don’t mind, I don’t mind, But I’m leaving all of that behind, Why do people believe in space and time? Why do people believe in rock and roll? I don’t know, I don’t know, But I feel it in my soul, And that’s why people believe in rock and roll.

Over and away, Beyond the places where we played, They told us of miracles and ancient creatures Ascending to thrones we couldn’t fathom, But there’s nothing we can’t fathom. When I turn into a cat, You will turn into a pigeon, When I turn into a god, You will turn into a figment, On the wrinkle of a cell In the prison of a mind That has left us all behind, But we won’t forget it.... I am drowning in the ocean Where my ancestry was built By a bottom-dwelling captain, Who could multiply his cells, He grew eyes and started speaking, Grew his ears and he could see, Puts his mouth over my head, But he doesn’t say a thing, Still I find that I am breathing From the water in my lungs, Could it be that Jacob’s ladder Pointed in instead of up, To the center of the Earth... Over and away, Beyond the places where you played, They told you of miracles and ancient creatures Ascending to thrones you couldn’t fathom, But there’s nothing you can’t fathom. (That’s the sound of the men working on the chain gang)

Imagine 2040 03:10
Imagine 2040 Do you think that anybody will be around? Will we beat the terrorists or will they still be lurking underground? Or will our enemies be the robotic entities we're building now? (Maybe so) In 2040 Russia owns the beaches where the ice-caps used to be. And China has moved to the moon with fortunes from all those lead factories. They're fighting off the Mexicans in space stations made from trees. Imagine 2040 man when all the Byrds and Beatles have passed on. (Dylan will still be kickin' though) Has the Earth been burned by fire? Will our ghosts be in a swarm? Can our dreaming be so healthy? Can it keep us safe from harm? Will the future be a miracle, a nightmare or a laugh, Will it be pure science fiction, or a reflection of the past? Well I hope I get a chance and I hope you get the chance Well I hope I get a chance and I hope we get a chance To know.

There was a fire Something burned I heard a voice Say it's your turn Helped stone the witch stoned the slave Helped put poor Lazarus Back in the grave And I found what I was looking for A treasure chest all filled with coals Spirit before me Harmonic oddity Sent from the ancient Worshippers of light I see through everything I'm not deceived I'm part of all I'm all alone And I found what I was looking for A sacred ark all full of holes And all those things we left behind And all those worlds we set on fire They're only shining to say Goodbye They're only shining to say Goodbye

Well the Devil came out of the TV set today and he told me that I'm foolish not to be afraid and the enemy is coming and the enemy don't care about you and me I tried to tell him I'm not sure but he threw some numbers in my face and he called my moral feelings fossils of another age. An age in which we didn't know the things that we know now. My tears welled up within me and I know that I am lied to all the time and I hope that I'll stay strong but I know I won't be understood when I try to make my ideas more than mine. And I told the dirty devil that our words are limbs whose only fruit is bitter and impossible to grasp. And for all I know he's telling me to throw my hands up in the air and laugh... So laugh I did, but I did not feel better. Satan just got bored, went off in search of warmer weather. And I remembered love And I remembered hope But my fears welled up within me and I know that I am lied to all the time and I hope that I'll stay strong but I know I won't be understood when I try to make my ideas more than mine.

The people are made out of metal The people are made of wax and champagne I've got my own kind of level Sent as a spectre from higher planes Was I overwhelmed by your spirit? As it floated before me in flames. "The storm has begun but don't fear it," Did I hear your ghost softly say? Serpents they stayed with the rebels Saint Oedipus paved the Milky Way I looked in your eyes with no fear in my heart And shattered the nerves I had left in my brain Was I overwhelmed by your spirit? As it floated before me in flames. "The storm has begun but don't fear it," Did I hear your ghost softly say? Inform the Moon We will leave at this time. The new plan has come! Onward! Away!

Jesus Johnny Appleseed Why do people act so mean Moses set my people free So why are they still running after me Don't you know you're in the lead? Our leaders left, and lo, we have real needs Come on Mary Magdalene How'd your dishes get so clean? Folks won't believe what folks ain't seen L. Ron Hubbard oughta know just what I mean When Obama won the race I think the C.I.A. had him replaced If I had the wings of a dove, Aut Kate I'd eat up all the candy, Lawd And tear down the White House gate Amazing grace how sweet the sound A bullfrog slapped his good old Grandma down Joseph Smith and Captain Kirk How do you get this brain to work? The pope says we should burn the books Or else we'll have to blame it on the Turks And when my beard's below my knees The TV News gonna call it a disease William Blake, let's pack the bags After we take a couple more drags Funny thing about addiction is It's always worse when you see it in your kids Roll a number for the road Pop those pills and lick the toads let's go If I had the wings of a dove, Aut Kate I'd eat up all the candy, Lawd And tear down the White House gate Amazing grace how sweet the sound A bullfrog slapped his good old Grandma down Sigmund Freud is apple pie I wanna know why sparrows fly Dick Cheney's tied to the railroad track With a hundred horny hound-dogs on his back

When you were a child like me You sat too close to the god-damned TV And your eyes broke open suddenly But you liked all the new things you saw And you lost your luster way too soon Spent years glazed over just watching cartoons And your flesh became a stuffy cocoon Without wings waiting inside And they tried to take it all away from you... But you can laugh You can laugh You can laugh You can smile You can smile You can smile But you can laugh You can laugh You can laugh You can smile... With money heavy on your back You chewed their lies and spit them back And death's an industry in fact Just like guilt and misery You sat on life and slept through church Became a legend before birth Thew out numbers, thrived on words And the colors, in those books that you read

Heavenly Father, won't you give me a lift? Cause you've got that big Rolls Royce and all I've got's the drift of the wind to tell me where to go Heavenly Father won't you clothe my naked back? After we go out to eat, I'll give the clothing back and we'll dine on my unanswered prayers Well I've had both my eyes plucked out by a son of a whore. And now I have to smell my way to the bright blue western shore. And I'll ask you why you've made my misery into a sport And just a little talk with blindness will make me whole. Well I'll climb the clouds to heaven and take back the controls. In the room with all the buttons I'll undo the wrongs of old. Bleep, there goes the Holocaust Bloop, goodbye to war Bling, all the money in the world is lost I'm gonna even up the score. The turn of a crank makes the mansions fall, Bums push the cops up against the wall, Weapons vanish and love will conquer all, And we'll sing... We don't have anything We don't want anything but Love Love Love Love Heavenly Father, won't you give us a chance You kicked us out of the garden but now we're ready for a glance of the peace you've kept from us. Heavenly Father, won't you give me a lift? Cause you've got that big Rolls Royce and all I've got's the drift of the wind to tell me where to go We don't have anything We don't want anything but Love Love Love Love
